《碩士論文是thesis還是dissertation?》

乍看是個白癡問題 , 一直以來都認為 master’s thesis 是碩士論文 , doctoral dissertation 是博士論文 , 研究生怎麼可能連這個都不知道? 但是當我閱讀到《TOP研究的必修課》(2008林育珊譯 , 附錄三 , 頁282) , thesis 竟然翻成 “博士論文" , 想說會不會是翻錯了 , 於是翻到前面 dissertation 看 :

博士論文 (thesis) : …是為了取得博士學位或博士研究資格所需的書面報告…. (摘錄)

學位論文 (dissertation) : 學位論文指的是一篇超越一般報告長度 , 並且需要長時間研究的報告. 學生在拿到碩士學位或第一個學位時 , 通常必須完成一篇學位論文 , 但這並不同於博士論文(thesis). 然而 , 在部分國家如美國或德國 , 學位論文也可以代表博士論文.

想知道是不是翻譯的問題 , 最好的辦法就是找原文來看 , 於是我 Google 一下這本書 , 有預覽 , 但是很不幸的 Appendix 附錄部分不給看. 另外一個讓我好奇這個問題是閱讀英國倫敦大學學者 Ken Hyland 的文章 “Metadiscourse: Mapping Interactions in Academic Writing" :

In this paper I explore how advanced second language writers deploy these resources in a corpus of 240 doctoral and masters dissertations totalling four million words. (底線為我所加)

兩個重點 : 第一 , 作者似乎以 doctoral dissertation 和 masters dissertation 區分博士論文和碩士論文 ; 第二 , 是 masters 還是 master‘s 亦或 masters’ ?

難道是英式用法和美式用法的差別? 台灣英語教育自古依循美式用法 , Ken Hyland 是英國學者 , 所以稱碩士論文為 masters dissertation? 發揮研究精神找到維基百科 THESIS 詞條 :

Canada : Major papers presented as the final project for a master’s degree are normally called thesis; and major papers presenting the student’s research towards a doctoral degree are called theses or dissertations.

United Kingdom : Outside the academic community, the terms thesis and dissertation are interchangeable. At universities in the United Kingdom, the term thesis is usually associated with PhD/EngD (doctoral) and research master’s degrees, while dissertation is the more common term for a substantial project submitted as part of a taught master’s degree or an undergraduate degree (e.g. BA, BSc, BMus, BEd, BEng etc.).

United States : At most universities, dissertation is the term for the required submission for the doctorate, and thesis refers only to the master’s degree requirement.

照這樣看 , 結論似乎是真的因為國情不同而有不同稱呼 , 只是英式與美式用法的差別. 至於第二個問題 , master 似乎應該要用所有格 , 至於是單數 master‘s 還是複數 masters’ , 還是像 Ken Hyland 的 masters , 有英文比較好的人可以給小妹我一個解釋嗎?
